On Sunday, April 1, the Democratic Town Committee gathered for the annual Century Club Brunch. Approximately 100 people — elected officials, DTC members, friends, family and one Republican – were on hand as the party recognized Jay Wolk and Shelley Cryan for their achievements.

Kicking things off, chairman Ellery Plotkin welcomed the guests and turned things over to Tony Janotta, who expressed Governor Dannel Malloy’s regrets for being unable to attend. (Of course, celebrating his wife’s birthday had to come first.) Janotta, though, began the blizzard of citations with the Governor’s documents for our recipients.

Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman spoke next, expressing her admiration for the Fairfield party before turning the podium over to rookie Senator Richard Blumenthal. The perennial friend to the town spoke warmly of the recipients and his own efforts in Washington. He was followed by Attorney General George Jepson, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill and Controller Kevin Lembo.

Long time friend to the DTC, Susan Bysiewicz, presented books about Ella Grasso to the recipients and renewed her affection for Fairfield. Also in attendance were State Central Chair Nancy DiNardo and Trumbull’ s Anthony Musto.

After people finally got a chance to sample the buffet, the second round of presentations began with State Representative Kim Fawcett making presentations to Jay and Shelley. Congressman Chris Murphy paid his respects while Jim Himes sent citations, unable to attend given his schedule in the Middle East.

Before the awards could be presented, a Governor’s citation was presented to longtime DTC member and public servant Joe Gall whose spirit was still willing but his 90 year old body told him it was time to retire from the Representative Town Meeting.

First Selectman Mike Tetreau next took the podium to read proclamations honoring Jay and Shelley with naming the day after them. Then, last year’s recipient, Heather Dean, presented Jay with the Denise Dougiello Young Turk Award. Fighting back tears, Jay spoke movingly about all the people around town who encouraged his role in public service and helped his campaign to gain a seat on the RTM. He spoke movingly of the moments that become cherished memories as he worked with various campaigns.

Finally, Barbara Rifkin, daughter of Sidney and Eunice Postol, came up to present the award named after her mother: Eunice Postol Award for Community Service. What was eye-opening for most in the room was the lengthy resume of activities spanning athletics and social work. Her accomplishments were not only in Fairfield but literally spanned the globe. Much of that was unveiled during Mike’s reading of the proclamation but her own anecdotes were equally moving.

Right on schedule, the afternoon wrapped up and could not have worked as smoothly without the efforts of the Fund Raising Committee, chaired by Heather Dean, aided and abetted by Lisa Winjum, Karen Hinch, Jen Hochberg, Tyson Toller, Sue Barrett, and Ruth Smey.

Jeanette & Al Janotta acted as our hosts at the Patterson Club and Richard Jacobs took nearly 100 pictures of the event.

It should be noted that the event was underwritten by Susan Barrett, Sal DiNardo; Chip Donovan; Kevin & Penny Flynn, Robert Greenberger, Richard Gribko, Kathleen Griffin, Bob & Roberta Stone, Debby Zieff, Philip Dwyer, Kim Fawcett, Michael Tetreau, Cristin McCarthy Vahey, Tom & Madelen Drew, and Susan Burstein

Dave, a romantic comedy starring Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver (1993), is the political version of the The Prince and the Pauper. When the president goes into a coma, a temp agency operator named Dave, who looks just like him, takes his place in the White House.

The Way We Were is a 1973 American romantic drama starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, directed by Sydney Pollack. The screenplay by Arthur Laurents was based on his college days at Cornell University and his experiences with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
